Arrived: May 2024
Species and Minimum Ethical Enclosure Requirement: Rats. Minimum enclosure size required is 4 cubic feet per rat, however, we recommend as much space as possible (double critter nation or comparable cage) since these are big boys.
Sex: Male
Age: 10 months
Location: Toronto (west end)
What is their background story?:
These boys travelled all the way from the St. Catherine's region as part of a huge intake of tuxedo rats (white with black-brown around head and stripe down back).
What is their favourite activity?:
These boys have come a long way since they first came into ACR care. They were nervous at first but now they have blossomed into absolute sweethearts. They are extremely easy to pick up and hold. They love exploring and climbing, but will come over to you at the first sign of a treat (they love everything so far - baby puffed rice cereal treats are their favourite)! If tap on the floor and call them over, they will gladly come see what you want.
What is their favourite food?:
Everything! They have a sweet tooth, but I try to give them treats that are a bit sweet and still healthy (fruit, puffed rice treats).
What is their best trait?:
They are so easy to handle! You just pick them up - they don't complain at all. You can even get some pets and kisses in before they demand to be let down on the floor to explore.

Species and Minimum Ethical Enclosure Requirement: Rat: the minimum enclosure size required is 4 cubic feet per rat.
Sex: Male
Age: About 7 months - siblings
Location: Oakville
What is their background story?:
They were rescued from a large hoarding situation. They were very nervous and defensive when they arrived at their foster home, but have learned that human hands are for pets and food. They now love to greet you when you walk in the room, and have warmed up to being picked up and carried around. Salt is more nervous about being outside the cage, but more open to being handled. Pepper is very sweet but doesn't love to be pet some days.
What is their favourite activity?:
Rearranging their entire cage. They won’t stop until everything is just right despite how much time their foster spent setting up their cage for them. They love to see the girl rats their foster owns, even if the girls don’t acknowledge them. They get very excited for free roam time, and have been building up their confidence very quickly from it. They enjoy it if you are directly and immediately there to reassure them. They will climb back on your lap or shoulder before leaving again to explore, getting nervous, and coming back to you to check in. They have been great about being scooped up and going back home.
What is their favourite food?:
They love all food. They used to be a bit too grabby/energetic when it came to treats, but have settled down and now with their food security, we have worked on gently taking treats and food. There have never been any fingers confused for treats if you stick your fingers in the bars. They are just as thrilled about their everyday food as they are about treats.
What is their best trait?:
They are very gentle and cooperative with each other. They never squabble over food and never play too rough with each other. Despite being fostered in a home that also has female rats (kept very separately of course), they have never shown any hormonal aggression or acted territorial.
Final thoughts:
These two would do amazing with another male rat who is brave and can show them the ropes. They do need some patience and attentiveness, as some days they are okay for pets and some days they’re not as thrilled about it. Overall, they have been steadily making improvements in being socialized.
