Gone But Not Forgotten

Lewis

Lewis sadly passed away in the care of All Creatures Rescue. He was loved dearly by his foster mom.

Stewart

Sweet hamster Stewart has passed away. He was one of the 5 "Marriot Hamsters" which enjoyed a night in a luxury suite before their freedom ride to All Creatures Rescue. He captured the heart of his foster mom when she found him sleeping on his back with his mouth open shortly after coming in to foster care. He was an absolute sweetheart of a ham and the family is devastated by his sudden passing.

Penny and Merlin

Last year we lost Merlin (formerly Leni) and Penny. These two were rescued from two very neglectful situations. Merlin was rescued by a wonderful ACR supporter where he was living in a petstore cage barely twice his size. He came to our vet the same day that Penny arrived from another rescue we did at the same time. They fell in love at the clinic and once they arrived in foster care they were inseparable. Literally no "bonding dates" were needed. They spent a year in foster care being goof balls. Merlin was the little angel getting Penny to break the rules for him. From using the cat litter box, to jumping on the kitchen table to throw fruit down for him, to punching anyone that would get near him to cut his nails there was nothing Penny wouldn't do for him. In spite of his mistreatment by humans Merlin never met a person he didn't like. He was the ultimate morning greeter. These two were partners in crime.

Merlin and Penny became bun ambassadors. We used to take Merlin to adoptathons to show people how incredible buns were. He won over even the most doubtful because he was the softest bunny ever. People couldn't stop touching him and luckily for us he could not be hugged enough by the two leggeds that loved on him. Penny became THE animal we pointed to to show that large black animals are the most gorgeous ever.

After being the perfect buns and the best buns we've ever had at the rescue they were adopted by one of the most incredible and kind humans we know. We were thrilled that she took these two on. Unfortunately Penny developed teeth issues but fortunately she was with a human who was willing to do anything to make her life great.

Unexpectedly earlier last year Merlin passed away. Out of the blue! We didn't understand why as he continued to the end to be the happiest bunny on the planet. Penny was absolutely devastated. We've never seen such grief and passed away a few days later from a broken heart.

We are still mourning and are in shock, but everyday we are grateful to have known these two and the wonderful humans that came into our lives because of them.

The world was a better planet because they were on it.

Gibby

We are heartbroken. We tried. We really tried. We are so sad to tell everyone that Gibby was helped to cross the rainbow bridge last week. Gibby had antiparasitics, a skin scrape and after another vet visit, antibiotics. But nothing helped.

He was provided a warm, snuggly enclosure with access to the best foods and organic fresh treats and he continued to deteriorate. The fur loss continued until he was 99% bald and his skin started to scab and irritate him.

The vet assumes that it was Cushings Disease for which there is little to do but watch for signs like the ones he showed us.

Thank you to everyone who donated for his vetting and to those who kept him in their hearts. RIP sweet Gibby.

Bella

In memory of our favourite mouse.

Bella was an extra special little creature. She had a beautiful personality, and was a favourite at the rescue. Though she didn’t like to be held she was VERY nosy, and would always come to the side of her enclosure to see what the fuss was about! She would take food from her human’s hands and didn’t mind her poking around near her cage. She loved her Banana Hammock and you could always find her snoozing there. Her favourite treats were cashews and raspberries, and she loved to burrow to the bottom of her enclosure and scare her human half to death. Bella, and her late mouse friend Cricket had an amazing life together. They were inseparable!

Bella taught us that the smaller you are the more amazing you are. And that we need to respect the tiniest amongst us. She was a great mouse ambassador, and we hope that thanks to her peoples perceptions of mice, domestic and wild, will begin to change for the better. Let’s start respecting them, let’s stop killing them, and let’s show people how adorable they are.

Lettuce

Lettuce, and her sister Pepper, had many life changes before they arrived at ACR. After being spoiled in foster care we were able to help them find the best forever home possible. She spent the last three years being loved and taken care of in all the ways she deserved. While Pepper misses Lettuce immensely, we are grateful that she is living with an incredible family that provides her with all she needs, and loves her more than anyone thought possible.
R.I.P. Lettuce.

Goose

Our little Goose passed away after weeks of fighting to overcome an abusive beginning…

One of our amazing rat foster mom's rescued him from a horrid situation and tried everything to help him. He was a trouper and a fighter but all the trauma was too much for his little body. He died by Maddy's side feeling loved and cared for.

He will be very missed.

Peter

Little Peter arrived at the rescue with his brother very sick. They both had been mistreated and neglected. Although they were in rough shape their wonderful personalities still managed to shine through. In spite of our best efforts Peter's tiny little body couldn't stay with us. He spent his last few weeks with an amazing foster family being spoiled and pampered.

He has left a piggie shaped hole in our heart and will be missed.

Moose & Pixel

It is with great sadness that we let you know sweet rats Pixel and Moose have passed. Surrendered to the rescue last February, it was discovered that Moose had congestive heart failure and thus the sisters were put in palliative care within the rescue. Little did we know that Pixel would be the first to pass from an aggressive mammary tumor, Moose passed a short 8 days later. They were the kindest rats you could meet - Moose was always giving kisses and keen to play and cuddle. Pixel liked people as well but, being a full-figured lady, was also quite interested in where the next snack was coming from. They will be greatly missed.

Please welcome Napoleon to All Creatures Rescue!

We were asked to help this little cutie recently when he wasn't doing well in the shelter. He has been in the shelter for several months. He has a persistent crusty eye that just won’t heal. We believe that it is the shelter environment that isn't ideal even for the best adjusted animal. We are positive that in a safe and quiet foster home he will get better in no time.

Billy

It is with deep sadness and difficulty that we share the news that Billy has passed away.

Despite incredible efforts by those responsible for his care and treatment, the cancer afflicting Billy was just too aggressive. It came back suddenly, after several months with a clean bill of health.

Billy has taught us many important lessons:

1. Always have a bucket list
2. There is ALWAYS time to stop for a hug
3. The older the animal, the shorter their time with you – the more exciting your life will become!

After his surgery, Billy had many wonderful months checking countless items off his bucket list, including swimming, hiking, and ice cream – lots of ice cream (thanks Pleasantville Creamery!). In his final days, Billy received tons of love and walks and all the things he enjoyed until it was time to say goodbye.

To those who have supported us with love, hugs, donations, shares of this campaign, saying goodbye, checking in and words of comfort, we will never ever forget your kindness. EVER! That's Billy's and our promise to you. Thanks so much!

Billy & Biggie Smalls

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our senior permanent foster Billy and his brother Biggie Smalls.

Billy and his brother Biggs came into the rescue almost 2 years ago. Both came in a bit shy, a bit scared and always ready to bite the hands that fed them. They soon became silly, adorable and never lost that fighting spirit. They had a really rough beginning but they were troupers and soon won the heart of one of our fosters. They relied heavily on each other, and loved each other dearly. It was hard for us to lose Biggie in January 2016, but even harder for Billy, who just didn't want any other rat unless it was Biggs.

Everyone that met these cuties wanted to take them home. They have left a big whole in our hearts. And we will miss them dearly.

-

Meet Billy and Biggie Smalls… two handsome brothers in search of a quiet place to call home. These two came into the rescue rather timid and scared, but with a bit of love, patience and TONS of hemp cereal they have become curious lovebugs.

Billy is the explorer of the two and is the first one out of the gate when something new appears in his line of sight. Biggie Smalls follows his brother AFTER the enviroment has been fully checked out and rated for safety. Both are thriving in their foster home, and have become the center of attention to all who visit.

Cordelia

Meet the "Little Princess" (as her foster family calls her!)

Cordelia is everything you would expect from royalty. She is well mannered, calm, charming and very classy! This cutie was rescued from a very neglectful and loud environment. She came in terrified and still flattens when scared. Her foster family has built her an amazing enclosure, and she is settling in wonderfully. She is quickly learning to trust humans, and loves to quietly hang with her fosters. She would do best in an home that provides her a fairly large living space and out of cage time. Her long hair will also require some grooming. She scares easily because of the abuse she suffered, but she is not aggressive and she would love to find a patient and loving family to call her own. She loves her hide-y places, hemp cereal and baby food!

Species: Syrian Hamster

Sex/Age: Female. Under one year old.

Bert & Ernie

It is with great sadness I report that my long term foster/part of the family rat Bert (Burton) passed away today. He now joins his bonded mate Ernie (Ernest) at rainbow bridge where they no longer suffer from chronic upper respiratory and decreased lung capacity. Bert was fortunate in the end to be infection free and pass of old age. His aging pains were well controlled and he still loved spending time outside in the fresh Muskoka air with me and I'm glad he got to see and smell one more spring. Thank you for my time with this wonderful pair of rats, and the millions of ratty kisses they have me.

Cranberry

Arrived
April 2017

Species
Mouse

Sex
Male

Age
A bit under 1

Update
”On December 28th we lost the sweetest and most adorable mouse, Sir Cranberry Pumpkin Seed (originally, Havarti). I feel very lucky to have had him as a friend for as long as I did. He was healthy and happy, and I hope to have given him a happy second chance at life. Our lives intertwined after I read his story on the All Creatures Rescue page. He was the lone survivor found discarded in a box in the middle of winter. His siblings had not made it. I wanted so much to care for him. Cranberry was a fascinating architect and he always impressed me with his creations; insulating his tissue box houses and making tunnels. He was fearless and curious, especially with our feline friend Owl. I was frequently entertained by their shenanigans. Cranberry would initiate a game of tag with her, within his home. He would go up to her and she would lightly bat at the spot he was standing in. He would then run to another spot, enticing her to "catch" him. The game would go on. They were often seen smelling each other, giving gentle wet nose kisses. This was the last photo taken of Cranberry. He was snuggling up in my onesie hoodie. Thank you Cranberry for being a part of our lives.”

Havarti was abandoned in a box outside on a cold wet night with his 3 brothers. Alone and unable to escape the four little ones clung to each other for comfort. A good Samaritan (terrified of mice) found them and rushed to get help. Unfortunately only Havarti survived. He is now safe in foster care where is loved and spoiled. We would love to find him a home where he can live safe and cherished in a huge enclosure.

Habanero

We lost our little Habanero.

Last month we rescued several pigs, including some very pregnant mommas, from a high kill shelter. We were their last hope. They didn't have much time let at the animal control facility, we didn't want the babies to be born in a shelter environment.

We got to them quickly and transferred the mommas to our Special Needs Coordinator who is running our amazing Guinea Pig Nursery.

The mommas were and are amazing. They supported each other during labour. They take turns looking after the babies so each one could have a bit of a break. They are raising some of the most perfect guinea pigs we've ever seen.

Habanero was one of those perfect little pigs. Having never experienced abuse, being surrounded by amazing guinea pig mommas and an incredible human foster mom, he became an adorable bundle of joy.

We started to worry because he didn't seem to be growing as fast as everyone else and seemed to be losing weight. We quickly jumped into critical care mode and after round the clock feedings, more vet tests than we can count, and tons of sleepless nights this little fighter just couldn't fight the genetics he was dealt.

Our vet is pretty sure a liver shunt was the cause. He just couldn't get nutrients out of food. The neurological component became too much, and he just never started to properly grow.

We've dealt with a lot of loss at the rescue but this has hit our Special Needs home really hard. Even the cats seem to be at a loss as to what to do.

Please send your love and support to our amazing Angel Fosters, and please send some good thoughts to our amazing guinea pig moms.

Rikki

It is with heavy hearts that we let our ACR friends and supporters know of the passing of our little Rikki.

Rikki came in suffering from severe neglect, but with the help of her very dedicated and loving foster mom she blossomed into a happy, healthy and very feisty hamster.

Rikki was an extra special hamster, and her mischievous side kept her family on their toes. We are so glad that she honoured us by coming to All Creatures Rescue. We are grateful that she was not adopted as her foster mom is who this little one needed and loved, And we are so thankful to her amazing foster mom who dedicated a lot work and time to making Rikki feel safe and loved.

Our thoughts are with her foster family this week.

Arrived:
June 2017

Species:
Syrian Hamster

Sex:
Female

Age:
Under 4 months old

Rikki came in severely abused and neglected. She is still very shy in her foster home and is making a lot of progress. She is looking for a loving family that can give her a second chance at a wonderful life.

Personality/temperament
Rikki is a timid girl and gets spooked easily. She will gladly take food from your hand, but can tends to bite sometimes if you leave your hand for too long. She loves listening to people talking and is always eager to come out and run around, but she does not really like to be handled, it is best to allow her to climb into a mug or cup (which she does without hesitation as she is very curious) in order to move her around. She has greatly improved since she first arrived and has potential to become even more trusting and sweet.

Ideal home
Rikki would be best suited for a more experienced home with no young children. She is very timid and gets scared by loud voices and unpredictability. She is not a fan of being handled, so would not be best for a family looking for a super snugly hamster. I'm sure with patience and commitment she will become even better with handling as she has already become so much better in the few months she has been in foster.

Favourite food
Rikki is not a very picky eater, but she especially loves Gerber puffs, veggies, and a bit of boiled egg the most. She also loves sunflower seeds, plus they are great when working on taming.

Interesting info
Rikki has  been on quite the journey and has quite the story. When see was first rescued, she would jump whenever you spoke, cry, and was terrified of people in general. Now, she is a completely different animal. She loves to hear you talk and will wake up and come out when you call her. She loves her sand bath/potty more than anything else and she loves to climb on anything she can. She also is a chewer, and will chew on most wooden toys she is given. She's crafty and sassy but she has a heart of gold. With lots of patience and unconditional love, this beautiful girl will be the perfect companion.

Additional Info
Rikki is very mischievous and will keep a family on their toes. She lets her foster mom pet her now and has become the silly hamster in the house.

Kramer, Jerry & George

These three mischievous bundles are settling in nicely at their foster home. They greet their foster mum with tons of excitement, and are loving their large enclosure! They are also learning to trust humans and play with them, but their favourite playmates are each other! Good things definitely come in small packages.

Pumpkin

We lost Pumpkin earlier this year but as the year draws to a close we wanted to share this gorgeous pic of her celebrating the holidays last year.

Pumpkin was an extra special hamster. She came in as one of the worst abused cases we have seen. We sent her to our extra Special Foster Home with the wonderful folks at Second Hope Circle and she began to get better. While she never became a "run into your hand and love me" hamster, she won over her foster mom with her natural charm, and her forever family with her drop dead gorgeous looks. Thanks to Pumpkin not only did we learn important lessons about healing and love, but because of her we got to meet her amazing mom that has become our Hamster Coordinator and Advisor.

Pumpkin will never be forgotten and we are very grateful that she choose our rescue as hers.

-

Pumpkin is a very unique looking hamster. She has a small tail, unusual face shape and is very fast moving for a hamster. She enjoys food and running in her wheel. She is very shy and prefers not to be handled. We are working with her and she will now occasionally take food from our fingers. She would love a home where her new guardians understand that she is shy and may prefer to be left alone. She is so cute and would be a great companion for someone with a busy schedule that enjoys taking care of another creature, including putting food out and cleaning her space. She has a large bin cage and enjoys exploring every corner of it to find food bits that may be hidden (a great enrichment tool!). Her favourite food is broccoli!

The ideal living situation would be with someone who has the space to provide a bin cage in a quiet area (instructions - lid not required as she does not escape). Additionally someone that doesn't mind that pumpkin does not wish to be handled. If you don't mind watching instead of touching she would be a great hamster companion for you.

Seth

Arrived:
June 2017

Species:
Syrian Hamster

Sex:
Male

Age:
Under 4 months old

Personality and temperament:
Seth is a calm, easygoing kind of guy who likes cruising around the room at his own pace, ears perked and alert, or settling down for a nap in your lap. He is easily startled by certain noises, such as footsteps, and is a little bit shy at first, but warms up quickly. He loves to eat, and love some cracker type foods in particular. He has a 'snuggle sack' which is a fleece sleeping bag type pouch he likes to sit in on your lap. It will go with him to his forever home for sure!

Which celebrity would he be:
Graham Coxon! Like the Blur guitarist, he's a little bit shy at first, but is very sweet once you get to know him. He likes comfortable things, lazy days, and comfort food. He has not, however, showed any interest in guitar.

Favourite food:
Pumpkin seeds and 'Love Ducks' puffed corn snacks in carrot and apple flavour made by Love Child Organics. He has refused to eat any vegetables as of yet.

Ideal living situation in his forever home:
Someone who could provide him with a bin cage and an area to free roam is a must, as well as plenty of shavings as he likes to burrow. A quiet home with older children or adults would be ideal, as he is easily startled by loud noises such as yelling and people running. He needs someone who would work with him to help him become less anxious, as well as showing him that being picked up is not scary. He's fine with you once he's out of the cage, but is scared once hands try to pick him up initially. He gets along equally well with both woman and men.

Does he get along with other animals of his species:
No

Does he get along with other animals of other species:
Haven't tried introducing him to other animals

Interesting facts:
He's a big cuddle bug. He is the happiest curled up on your lap and being petted. He does not like vegetables, but since he is young he can probably be convinced to try them.

Additional info:
There is a dog in his foster home, and oddly enough, the barking doesn't bother him. Other noises do, but not the noises of other animals. He's quite young, and is not yet fully grown, meaning he is probably under four months of age. He needs to settle into foster care and will be available for adoption in about a month. He is a super silky hamster, so he will need a home that is very careful with extreme changes in temperature both hot and cold.

Does he get along with other animals of his species: Haven't tried to introduce them

Belle

Arrived: October 2016

Species: Dwarf hamster

Sex: Female

Age: Approx. 8 months

Location: Burlington

Personality and temperament: She's very active and loves running on her wheel; she LOVES hard boiled egg whites and sunflower seeds. She is very skittish about people and does bite but she will improve with time and patience

What celebrity would she be: Margot Robbie because she does a fantastic "crazy eyes" and she's very hyper.

Favourite food: Sunflower seeds and oats

Ideal living situation in her forever home: She should be housed alone in a large bin house, with tons of out of bin time.

Does she get along with animals from a different species: She should not be forced to deal with other animals.

Interesting facts: She is very quick and makes a game of grabbing onto her foster mom's sleeve and climbing up on her arm when her she is getting new food and water.

Additional info: Her biting is not an aggression issue. She is healing from a lot of abuse and her bites are a  fear response. This will improve over time with enough patience and compassion

Kalub

Status:

Available Soon

Arrived:

June 2017

Species:

Syrian Hamster

Sex:

Male

Age:

Under 4 months old

Location:

Ballantrae (Stouffville)

Personality and temperament:

When Kalub arrived in his foster home, he was terrified. He screamed, rolled onto his back, hissed, and tried to bite. Now, less than two weeks later he has made leaps and bound in his progress, and can now be held, petted, let out to explore, and loves to spend time with his foster mom. He is just a baby, so he's trying to test his limits at the moment, seeing how much he can get away with. Sometimes he will bite for no reason, such as when he runs up to you, and waits, seemingly for a reaction. If you don't give him one, he loses interest, and won't try it again. Much like the baby he is, he's fascinated with the world around him, and loves new toys, smells, rooms, and foods, and is eager to try them. He fears being picked up, as well as new people, but once he gets used to you he reveals the bold, outgoing little guy that he truly is.

Which celebrity would he be:

Noel Gallagher. Once he gets to know you he's unafraid, unashamed, and tries to test his limits. He has no problem trying new things, and isn't really concerned as to whether or not you want him doing what he wants. He's a limit pusher, a little bit of a jerk at times, and acts differently until he gets to know you. Once you get over the way he initially acts, however, you'll find he's a loveable hammie who would make the perfect companion.

Favourite food:

Kalub will eat just about anything, but has shown a particular interest in spinach and baby carrots. He loves vegetables!

Ideal living situation in his forever home:

At the moment, Kalub has shown to be fearful around new people, but is progressing quickly. Because of this, a home with adults, teens, or respectful children who are supervised at all time are all fine. His potential adoptive family needs to understand that he is scared of new people, and may at first act like he initially was in his foster home with them, which includes hissing, screaming, biting, and overall fearfulness. He is expected to adjust quickly, however, and his foster mom has no doubt he will eventually become a hamster suitable for children to interact with. An adult in the home would need to initially lift him out of his cage, however, as he is still scared of being lifted until he is in your hands. The potential adoptive family also needs to be patient with him, as he likes to do things he knows he shouldn't to try and get a reaction. The best way to curb this behaviour is to not acknowledge it, as it seems to deter him when he doesn't get the reaction he was expecting. Overall, a family or single who had an open mind and understands that Kalub has had a hard life so far, can provide him with a large cage, out of cage time, patience, and the time he deserves is a must. He is eager to learn, and is a wonderful boy.

Does he get along with other animals of his species:

No

Does he get along with other animals of other species:

Haven't tried introducing them to other animals

Interesting facts:

He is very young! He's still growing, and is very tiny. As mentioned, he is very scared and very timid but the right family will be able to show him life is not bad after all. He is sensitive to extreme temperature changes and will need a hamster savvy family to call his own.

Frank

Arrived: July 2016

Species: Rabbit

Sex: Male (neutered)

Location: Kitchener

Personality and temperament: Bun Bun is a quiet little guy. He likes to lounge around and make himself little "nests" in secluded areas. Although he enjoys his time alone, he will let you know when he wants to play by jumping up on you and picking up his toys in his mouth and throwing them. Bun-Bun is a little shy and prefers to be petted on his own terms. He is fully litter trained.

Favourite food: Blueberries, carrots, lettuce, strawberries. He is very easy to please! Unlimited access to hay is a must.

Ideal living situation in forever home: Bun-Bun seems to be afraid of cats and dogs. He tolerates our foster hamster, Viola. We would love to find him a cage free home with another rabbit.

Does he get along with other animals of his species: Haven't tried to introduce him.

Does he get along with other animals of other species: Rodents

Interesting facts: Bun-Bun is quite curious and likes to explore nooks and crannies. He will need a rabbit-proofed home where he can't get stuck anywhere.

Additional info: Bun Bun has been through some neglect and abuse in his short life. He would love to find a loving quiet home, preferably with another rabbit that will continue to help him come out of his shell. He has a lot of love to give!

Adoption fee: $135

Carter

We lost our little Carter.

Carter came in as a neglected senior. He was one of the sweetest hamsters we met last year. His family is a true inspiration and a great example of what a "hamster" family should be. They took a chance on an older animal. They did a ton of research and spent a ton of time building him an amazing enclosure. They treated him exactly how an individual should be treated. They didn't think Carter's age or size should determine the level of love, treats, freedom and respect he got.

We got amazing updates from Carter. He loved his condo. He loved helping his mom when she was trying to work on the computer. And he loved the Ikea size furniture she got him.

He was one of the reasons we had three huge hamster rescues last year. How could we not help when there were amazing hamsters like Carter out there that were willing to love, and forgive us humans. Carter had courage, a cheeky personality and a chill attitude. We loved Carter and he taught us so much. His amazing updates kept us going last year.

Please remember there is no such thing as a "Starter Pet". All animals require the same level of care and thoughtfulness that is usually reserved for larger animals.

A few weeks ago Carter slowed down a bit. His amazing family sent us one last great update.

"He's definitely started to slow down a little and he's looking more like a little old man (understandable since he isn't a spring hammy anymore!) but he's still as happy as ever and he's definitely enjoying being spoiled with love and treats. Last night he got an extra special treat - a hamster sized raspberry pie! The silly boy was so excited that he forgot all of his table manners and pulled it onto the floor to dig into it. Carter also asked me to send out a special hello to all of his friends at All Creatures Rescue :) "

We're vey sad at ACR. In this life there are rare individuals that touch you deeply and give you hope. Carter was such an individual.

RIP Carter.

Carter has been adopted!

His new family followed our advise to the T. We couldn't be more thrilled that this little guy found a home that took the extra time to build him an amazing condo! THANK YOU!!! For treating this little man with the love and respect he deserves.

"Hello from Carter!!! Now that Carter has had some more time to settle in, his personality is really starting to shine through! He is such a friendly little guy - he loves to come over to the side of his home to say hello. His favourite part of the evening is the time when he comes out to play in his huge playpen! It's fun to watch him run around and explore all of his new toys. He has definitely been a wonderful addition to the family! He also wanted me to give a special hello to Veronica :) Thank you for caring for this little man and giving him a second chance!"

Carter is ADOPTED!!!

This love bug has found a home that appreciates his non-stop energy. His wonderful foster mom stayed up many nights playing with this cutie and will miss him dearly. But she is so excited for all his new adventures.

We can't wait for the Happy Tails updates and all the out-of-focus pictures of him running around! We love you Carter!!!

Status: Adopted

Species: Syrian hamster

Sex: Male

Age: Approximately 1 year old

Location: North York

Personality and temperament:

Carter is an active and affectionate hamster. He loves running on his wheel and building nests. He really seems to enjoy human company. He will come running to the side of his bin cage to greet his caretakers as soon as he sees them. He is fine with being handled but like most hamsters, he quickly becomes restless. He loves to run through his tubes but will only lay down to rest near one of the entrances. He is quite comfortable around humans but can be a little skittish when you approach him too quickly or unexpectedly.

Which celebrity would he be:

David Carter, The 300 Pound Vegan and intersectional ARA

Favourite food:

He likes cashews and sunflower seeds (in limited quantities) but his absolute favourite food is bananas.

Ideal living situation in their forever home:

Carter would do best in a home where he would receive attention and out of cage time. A large bin cage is essential as he is quite the active fellow. He would likely do well with children who are 13+, or possibly younger children who can be respectful of his space. While he tolerates and sometimes even likes being held, he is happiest when he can roam free. A home with other animals (including non-predatory cats and dogs) would likely be suitable as well.

Interesting facts, tips, or traits:

Carter has super silky, luxurious fur. He's grooms himself regularly to make sure every hair is in place.

Ronda

We lost Ronda recently. It took us a while to post her because it was just too painful. This cutie came in abused, scared and hurt. Her foster mom fell in love with her right away and got to work. With treats, love and patience she began to see that life and the odd human, wasn't always bad. We are grateful she wasn't adopted. Her remaining happy months were with the person she loved dearly - her foster mom.

We can't put it better than her foster mom has:

"She was one of the most resilient and strong-willed hamsters I've had the privilege of caring for. Once after I had cleaned and rearranged her bin habitat, I came back and discovered that she had somehow managed to move her mini IKEA chair back to its "proper" place. Lol. Although she had a rough start, she was starting to come around and trust humans a little closer to the end. I still can't look at the photo below without smiling. It's definitely a good depiction of her personality."

October 2016

Sex
Female

Species
Dwarf Hamster

Ronda came in as part of a large hamster rescue. She was found neglected and abused with several dozen other hamsters. Everyone is recovering in foster care. All the little hamsters are still a bit shy and afraid of humans. We have no doubt that with a bunch of time, love and of course treats Ronda and the other Dwarf  Campbells Hybrids will grown into amazing little creatures.

Pistachio & Peanut

Arrived: October 2016

Species: Dwarf hamster

Sex: Females

Location: Welland

Personality and temperament: Pistachio is very active, but a little quiet. She is quick to come out and socialize when called, and will crawl right into your hand if you rest it into the cage. She takes treats right from your hands, and has slowly learned to trust. Pistachio will occasionally give warning nips to fingers if she doesn't want to be bugged, but that's usually only if cats are nearby. She loves running in her wheel, and loves running and tumbling off her playground. She also loves climbing up the side of her habitat, even when kitties are right there! Pistachio is very curious and adventurous... She may be quiet, but she's a sneak and will find a way to get out of her habitat, if you're not careful! Pistachio learns quickly, so when she's out for exercise, keep an eye on her!

Peanut is very active and outgoing. She's fast and excited about everything. She jumps and rolls off her house and climbing gym, and is always climbing the sides of the cage to check out her space. When called, she's the first one to pop her head out of the nest to see what's happening. She is getting more socialized with humans, and is becoming more comfortable. Peanut will occasionally nip a finger as a warning, if she doesn't want to be handled. She is definitely a confident hammie!

Which celebrities would they be: Pistachio would be like Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality. She's calm, but rather quirky and extremely resourceful. She got a special kind of personality, and she's assertive if she needs to be! If Peanut were a celebrity, I think she'd be Taylor Swift in the "Shake it off" video... Energetic, excited, happy, and confident, while totally dancing to the beat of her own drum.

Favourite food: They love any and all  food. Pistachio will hoard her crunchies, so be aware of how much you refill her dish! They love fruit, and fresh veggies & berries as treats.

Ideal living situation in their forever home: Pistachio would do well in a quieter home, with no small children. She should be adopted with her foster sister Peanut, as they are well bonded. Pistachio would be fine with other pets in the house, provided she's safe when she's out for exercise and socializing (behind a closed door). They will need a large enclosure (check out Hamster Bin Housing) and will need two of everything to prevent fighting (two wheels, two hideys etc).

Do they get along with other animals of its species: Yes

Do they get along with other animals of other species?: Haven't tried introducing them to other animals

Interesting facts and tips: Although a little bit more shy than her sister, Pistachio was the first to crawl into your hand, even when treats weren't being offered. She really loves to explore!
If you're giving Peanut a treat, you have to give one to her first, THEN her sister - or else they fight over the first treat!

Additional info: Pistachio is pretty calm for a dwarf hammie, and with time may become quite the little snuggler. Peanut is feisty! If a kitty is climbing on the cage, she's right there checking out the kitty, letting the kitty know she's not scared! These girls were rescued with over a dozen hamsters from an extremely abusive situation. Though they have suffered from horrible neglect they have learned in their foster home that humans are not so bad after all.

Oliver

We lost our kitten Ollie.

At 18 years young Oliver was one of the favourites in the rescue.
About two months ago he was thrown outside in a carrier, and abandoned. That however is a small part in his amazing story.

So many folks helped to rescue Oliver. That is what we are focusing on right now. The wonderful folks from Guelph Lost and Found, the kind individual who stopped to "check out" the meowing he heard in the woods, our amazing "senior animal" coordinator that snatched him up and got him into one of our foster homes quickly!!! And of course the foster mom that has loved on him for the last two months. That's Oliver's story!!!

After a ton of vetting, and too many health checks to count, Oliver's body shut down in 24 hours and he died peacefully. He didn't die alone. He died with his foster mom by his side holding her "paw".

So we don't want to see any sad faces on our page today. This is not a sad time at the rescue. This week we are overwhelming grateful for the amazing team of people that worked to get Oliver to us! We are so happy that Oliver spent two months in an amazing foster home. He loved on us as much as he was loved. He was able to spend two months being hugged and kissed and stuffed with treats. He played with the dogs he shared a space with and loved on the cats that lived with him. He has re energized our resolve to rescue more seniors.

There are too many happy things to focus on with Oliver. His amazing personality. HE LOVED EVERYONE!!! The amazing individuals who took time they didn't have, money they didn't have to help. All the people who donated $10, $20 towards his care. Every dollar went such a long way to us helping Oliver. This is not a time to focus on the horrible individual that threw Oliver outside, where chances are he wouldn't have been found. Nope you have all heard the lectures before about these cold people! This is a time to focus on the couple of people that came forward this week to ask about adopting this little man. They took a look at a cat who we suspect was older than 18, and were as excited about him as we were. You have all kept us going and made us smile!

We would love to start a fund for senior animals in honour of Oliver, or an education outreach program. That is something to discuss with you all in 2017.

For now we hope that Oliver can inspire many of you to adopt a senior animal: a dog, a hamster, even a fish!!! Or in honour of Oliver share a senior in need of a home on your page!!

We will miss you Oliver. We love you so so so much!

Arrival: September 2016

Species: Cat

Sex: Male (neutered)

Age: Approximately 16 years old

Location: Toronto

Oliver was rescued when a good Samaritan came upon him in a secluded area. He was in a closed carrier, abandoned on a hot day, in the middle of nowhere. He is recovering wonderfully in his foster home, and will be getting fully vetted soon. In the meantime his foster mom says that despite all he's been through he has the most relaxed and amazing personality of any cat she has ever met. In fact he is making all the other "permanent" animals in her home look pretty bad in comparison.

Taylor

We lost our little Taylor.

It's been a bittersweet week for us. Tons of hamsters are heading our way, and we lost one that has meant a lot to our ACR family.

This sweetheart came in very abused, and we suspected he was also very old. He had vision issues, hearing issues, and anger issues. This made him a bit feisty and nippy. Despite this he was a hit at the vet office and soon became a lovebug in his foster home. The last few weeks Taylor slowed down a bit, but also made a ton of progress. He started playing more and more and even ate carrots while sitting on his foster mom's shoulder. THIS WAS BIG as he had bitten her several times when we first rescued him.

This weekend we wish all of you a wonderful Thanksgiving. We are so THANKFUL that we got to meet Taylor, and that he wasn't adopted! He got to spend many wonderful months in a wonderful foster home.

Please send his foster mom some positive vibes, and thank you to you all for all your love and support.

Arrival: June 2016

Species: Syrian hamster

Sex: Male

Age: Senior

Location: North York

Personality and temperament: Taylor is a sweet hamster looking to live his golden days in a loving home. He is active, spending much of his time on his wheel or burrowing through various houses and tubes in his enclosure. He really enjoys out of cage time and being able to explore on the floor. He also enjoys human interaction and being able to wander around on your lap. He doesn't mind being handled but like most hamsters, he quickly becomes restless.

Favourite food: He likes everything but apples and crackers seem to be his favourite.

Ideal living situation in their forever home: Taylor would do best in a home where he would receive attention and out of cage time. A large bin cage is essential as he is the active and likes to explore. He would likely do well with children who are 13+, or possibly younger children who can be respectful of his space. While he tolerates and sometimes even likes being held, he is happiest when he can roam free. A home with other animals (including non-predatory cats and dogs) would likely be suitable as well.

Interesting facts, tips, or traits: Taylor has a cataract in one of his eyes that we have been monitoring.

Molly

Our little Molly is gone.

We rescued Molly when she was over 2 years old (and we suspect older). She came in very neglected and blind in one eye. In spite of this her gentle personality made her a hit at adoption events. We feared that because of her age not only would no one want to adopt her, but anyone inquiring about her wouldn't bother building her a proper enclosure. So we prepared to put Molly into our permanent foster program until one day her amazing mom showed up. She contacted us about Molly, asked us tons of questions, rushed off to get her a huge bin, and started building.

A week later Molly was in her amazing home, and a few weeks later we got the most AMAZING pictures of Molly climbing on top of her mom and having the time of her life. Molly was extra special to us. We know we say that ALOT but she truly was. She made so many people rethink small animal care. She brought home the message that no animal is too small, too old, or too broken to be loved and have a family of her own. Molly was not only loved more than we've ever seen a hamster be loved, but her mom educated herself so much on proper care that we literally couldn't have asked for a better home.

We are saddened for her wonderful mom as Molly's loss has hit her hard. A small funeral was held this week, and the family is in mourning.

We can't help but smile a little though knowing that Molly spent the last few months running around in a huge open space, climbing on top of her mom and probably destroying her school work, being loved on and cared for properly instead of stuck in a small cage getting food thrown at her.

Please send her mom some kind vibes this weekend. The loss of this tiny ball of fur has left a huge hole in her heart.

Molly is missed.

Molly's ADOPTED!!!

Molly won many hearts everywhere we took her. This senior was severely abused and we were hoping that maybe one day she would be a happy hammie in her foster home. Not only is Molly a happy hammie, but she found her forever family.

Here's here Happy Tail!!!

"Molly's settling in very well - climbed my shoulders and went to the very top of my head, haha.  I let her out in my room from 7 pm to 12 am. She's very okay with me handling her now which I was surprised by! She also loves loves loves climbing and is very adventurous."

We all love Molly and she will be missed. But we are doing a little hammie dance here at ACR!!!

-

Molly Update!

Molly came in abused and neglected and absolutely terrified of human contact. We assumed she would be skittish forever, and simply wanted to just give her a good quality of life in a hamster experienced foster home.

We are pleased to report that with the right treats and after a month of being spoiled her foster mom has totally won this little girl over. She now climbs all over her foster family and enjoys loving on them. Molly may be a senior but she has tons of cuteness left in her.

-

Status: Adopted

Arrival Date: February 14 2016

Species: Hamster

Sex: Female

Age: 1.5 - 2 years old

Location: Toronto

Personality and temperament:

Molly is very active from 7pm to 10pm. She is very active and has a very gun-ho personality. Because of her previous experiences, she is occasionally nervous and does not like being picked up from above.

Which celebrity would she be?:

Melissa McCarthy

Favourite food?:

Yogurt drops, so far

Ideal living situation in her forever home?:

Molly needs an adult carer. I don't think that children would be good carers for her; she needs to be watched carefully as she is so quick, but she also needs to be handled delicately because she is nervous.

Does she get along with other animals:

Molly has been through a lot in her short life. A home where she does not have to interact with other animals would be best.

Interesting facts, tips, or traits:

Molly has a very gun-ho personality with an inner Furiosa. She is a senior hamster with poor vision, but her energy is boundless.

Additional Info:

Molly has a beautiful spirit and is looking to enjoy her life after having such a miserable start. Any potential adopter would need to commit to sufficient time in the evening for playtime and exploring. She is also larger than the average Syrian, and would need a suitable enclosure.

Adoption fee: Waived due to Molly being a senior. But a small donation would be appreciated.

Wally

We lost our Wally. Not much to say except we are very sad.

Wally came in with a bunch of rabbits that were very neglected, and some heavily abused including Olive, Molly, and Penny. Wally was dealing with some health issues that we thought we had under control. Unfortunately this adorable little man lost his fight.

We are grateful that we were able to help him, and place him in an incredible and knowledgeable foster home for the last four months. We don't want to imagine how much harder his life would have been without his amazing foster mom.

We are very thankful for having have met him.

A huge thanks and bunny kiss to his amazing rescuer that spent weeks trying to rescue him, the wonderful transporters that woke up earlier than anyone should to come bring him to us, and his amazing foster mom that seemed to have spent what felt like every week going to the vet with the little guy. We will be forever grateful for the love and care all of you have put into this beautiful being. The incredible people he has brought into our lives was his gift to us.

We love you Wally.

Molly

We lost Molly.

Molly came in with a group of animals from very abusive and neglectful situations. Some were dealing with a lot of injuries and all had emotional scars. A few were thriving, and while we have lost a few from that group despite our best vetting efforts, we took comfort in the ones that were hopping around happily. Molly was one of those animals.

Her foster mom was a first time bunny lover and couldn't believe how amazing this little munchkin was. We couldn't believe how well Molly and her foster mom were adjusting to each other!!!

While her foster mom is devastated, and could use some kind words on this page, it brings us so much comfort knowing that Molly spent a few months in a home that was perfect for her. She felt loved and spoiled for the first time, and by sheer luck we found one of the most attentive and loving foster homes for Molly.

We had hoped that Molly would finally find a patient, loving, playful, attentive family that were over the moon to have her - and she found just that in her foster mom.

Arrival Date: May 2016

Species: Rabbit

Sex: Female

Age: Under a year old

Personality and temperament: Molly is a super friendly rabbit who loves to run around and play. When she's not munching on hay she can be found relaxing in her favourite spot,

Ideal living situation in her forever home: Somewhere where she can have plenty of space to explore, run around and binky to her heart's content.

Does she get along with other animals of her species: Haven't tried to introduce them

Does she get along with other animals of other species: Haven't tried introducing her to other animals

Interesting facts: She loves humans and will always come up for a sniff and some attention and will sit by you, but like most bunnies she's not a fan of being picked up.

Willow

It is with heavy hearts that we tell you all about the passing of our sweet Willow.

Willow was part of a series of rescues we have done over the last month of abused and neglected animals. We placed her in one of our special needs foster homes because she needed extra love and care.

Willow is just one of the many "little" animals out there who too often end up in neglectful situations. Many of these animals are given to kids as gifts. These animals spend their short lives being mishandled, terrorized or oftentimes imprisoned and ignored. It begins at the ‪#‎pet‬ stores, when ridiculous things like "hamster balls” - that are nothing short of scary small inescapable devices meant for human amusement - are presented to customers as "great" for an animal. Along with cages (that are more like small prisons) sold as appropriate housing, people leave with empty wallets and inappropriate (if any) knowledge of the care required for the small animals to thrive. The lives of these animals in children's room are often miserable.

Our rescue promotes cage-free environments (when possible) for these animals. People are startled and confused at this suggestion. Yet, who would think it was OK to lock their ‪#‎cat‬ up in a small room or large crate for the majority of their lives? We also try to educate people about investing in DIY caging projects. Anyone wanting to invest in the proper care of these animals (as all animals including small domestics will require money if properly taken care of) will need to research how to build proper housing. Let's make this clear - there is no proper or large enough housing currently sold on the market today. You will need to build your own. There are many great sites that have creative and wonderful DIY cage suggestions. These little ones, just like any energetic dog or playful cat, need lots of time and room to play!

These wonderful beings are not "starter" animals or ones to be given to a child. A child, through no fault of their own, does not have the attention span to take care of a living being. Rodents - and all animals - are a member of the entire family and should be treated as such. They are not toys to be carried around, criminals to be locked up, or playthings to be used for sporadic entertainment. The more you live with them, truly live with them, the more their amazing personalities will shine through. If you don't have the time or money or energy for a dog, DO NOT adopt a small domestic animal.

It's hard to imagine how confused it must be to be stuck in a plastic ball, how frustrating it must be to be closed off in a cage the size of a small bathroom with little to no stimulation, or how scary it is to be picked up, dropped, or manhandled. As the initial excitement wears off, the lucky ones end up in shelters, the unlucky ones end up in cages sometimes without regular food and water, or released into the wild to fend for themselves in an environment they have had no time to get accustomed to.

Willow spent an amazing month in a loving, patient, responsible and caring foster home. Her incredible foster mom built her a large bin to play in, with just the right sized wheel, tons of great food, lots of attention and "personal time".

Willow had an incredibly patient foster mom and slowly began to trust the first human who showed her love, and provided her with the appropriate environment for her to blossom.

You will be missed little one. While our hearts are breaking beyond belief, we have been so lucky to have met you!

-

Meet Willow!

She was abused and neglected and came in quite terrified. We quickly placed her in our special needs foster home, and though she has only been there for a few weeks, her foster mom has quickly won her over. Willow is enjoying her new rescued life, and we couldn't be more thrilled! Every day Willow is ready for the adventures of that day. She loves running on her wheel and sleeping in her space pod. She likes being hand-fed her food. Her favourite food is sugar free Shredded Wheat cereal!

Species: Syrian Hamster

Sex/Age: Female. Under one year old.

Oscar

Oscar was the reason the rescue was started. When we first rescued Oscar not only did we not know what a hamster looked like we didn't realize they needed to be caged. So we didn't' cage him! Living this kind of life Oscar was able to show us how amazing these creatures are and how big their personalities are if they are just allowed to live a prison free existence. People were shocked that we didn't put him behind bars, but then were overtaken about what a silly little man he was. Soon people who met Oscar realized that just like cats and dogs hamsters deserve to live outside of a tiny space.Oscar spent his days sleeping and his nights playing with us. His favourite food was baby food and any type of berry. He is missed every day.

oscar.png

Marigold

Marigold was adopted by one of our amazing foster families. She lived out her whole life in our rescue family. Here is what her foster mom had to say about her when she adopted her:
"After 6 months fostering Marigold we decided that she was here to stay! A little darling, Marigold is sweet and lets us handle her. she always comes out to say hello! She brightens our day and we are happy to say she will be loved and cherished in our home."

marigold.jpg

Panda & Jinx & Friday

We thought we rescued one guinea pig, until we woke up the next day and found three. We don’t often see babies, so this pic (of day old pigs) was our guilty pleasure. The babies were named Jinx and Friday (because they were born on Friday the 13th of course). Being cage free Jinx and Friday quickly learned what the fridge held and ran up to it often demanding snacks. They were extra special to the rescue and are very much missed.

A cage free pig is a happy pig! For info on how to safely provide a cage free environment for small domestics, (after all, who wants to live in a prison their whole lives?) contact us.

For info on how to (cheaply) build your own enclosures, visit our friends at Piggles Rescue.

panda jinx friday.jpg

Sugar

Sugar was the most abused hamster we have ever seen. She was so scared of us that we were at a loss of what to do. We usually don't like to cage any rodents (we would rather create large open pens for them), but with Sugar we had no choice. With love patience and treats, LOTS OF TREATS she came around and was a total love bug. Proving how amazing the personalities of these little ones are if they are just allowed out of small cages. We loved Sugar and Sugar loved us!

SUGAR-copy.jpg

Jimmy, Princess & Thumper

"My dearest friends. Jimmy rescued from a meat farm; Princess too I think; and little Thumper from a small cage on a hot summer balcony. All gone now. Jimmy and Princess so calm and happy always. Little Thumper being a bit naughty. Wonderful times with wonderful bunnies. May they rest in peace with Scooter, Bobby, Sophie, Cammy, Nicky, Joey, Gerry, Billy, Larry and Daryl - my other fuzzy friends that have crossed the rainbow bridge in the last 20 plus years. May they all truly all rest in peace. I miss them so much every day. I imagine they are all together at my feet as I walk and sit. Perhaps some day."

Galahad, Edwin, Merlin & Lancelot

It is with great sadness and gratitude that we bid farewell to the four cutest little beings we had been lucky enough to have rescued. These guys came into our rescue over a year ago. We didn't know how long they had so we wanted them to start experiencing love and affection as soon as they could. We couldn't believe our luck when by chance the most amazing foster mom stepped up to do just that! Shortly after she brought them home these little guys became "permanent fosters".

We couldn't describe them any better than this update we got from the foster mom shortly after she brought them home:

"They are such beautiful little beings it's a such a pleasure and blessing to be able to provide them with some space to live comfortably. I love how delightfully curious they are. Every time my brother or I walk into the room, they stretch their little heads outside their shelter with their noses in the air to check out our scent. Merlin will take food from my hand, but Lancelot is more cautious and will only stay outside the shelter for a short time when the door is open. Galahad and Edwin are shy but adorable. They are very sweet and I love that they are here."

The last of the brothers, Lancelot, passed away this month. It was an honour to have had you guys in our rescue. We started the rescue for little ones like you! You will be missed.

Montigue

By the time we got this little man he was riddled with cancer. Though his time with us was short, he received lots of much needed love and care in his amazing foster home. He made a huge impact on the rescue and reminded us that focusing on the hard-done-by animals is worth every tear.

You will not be forgotten you beautiful soul.

Apple

Apple was adopted into a very loving home. Though she was always a bit shy, she received a ton of love and brought laughter to her family. She loved cuddly fleece, dark hide-outs, and exploring. We only wish she had a chance to enjoy her short but sweet retirement for longer.

Jem

RIP Jem <3

We’re so happy you got an awesome family in your last few months.

Pug

A cage free hamster is a happy hamster. Whenever possible create a "safe" room for the little ones. They enjoy being out of small spaces and exploring just as much as a dog and cat. Would you like spending your time in a closet for most of the day and night! Pug was the daredevil at ACR. He loved exploring, hiding food, and sleeping with his foster mom.

Pug was adopted into the rescue after surviving some hardships. He lived out his life cage-free and enjoyed the company of many caring humans.

Ozzy

Update
Little Ozzy wasn't a fan of being handled but he didn't mind if his person wore knitted mittens. He was a happy active little fella who always brought a smile to his family. Unfortunately Ozzy developed diabetes. We sent him to a Special Needs sanctuary. They tried everything to help him but he passed away shortly after arriving. His short time with us made a huge impact. He lived fast and loved large. We will miss him dearly and are very grateful for our time with him.

Amy

Sadly Amy lost her battle with breast cancer and was humanely euthanized. She was happy every minute of every day. Her aggressive masses showed a weakened pressure spot and her veterinarian confirmed it was time. This tough girl was given a few weeks to live in November and made it two months. Two months that she got to know love, compassion, and spoiled beyond belief. She really truly became a member of this family.

Amy came in with over a dozen severely neglected rats. She was immediately placed with our amazing vet tech, Amber, and received the best care possible. Since she arrived at our Special Needs Foster Home Amy felt loved, cherished and safe.

We will miss her dearly but we are so grateful that Amy got to live with Amber and have the best life a rat could possibly have in her reaming months.

Noodle

We said goodbye to Noodle this evening, as he went to join his beloved mama, Molly, over the Rainbow Bridge.

Noodle was the sweetest boy mousie ever, and was so loved by his girls. He shared a double Critter Nation with Molly, his little sisters Rosie & Jelly Bean, and adopted sister Blossom.

He was often found at the center of a sleepy mouse heap, after playing and wheel-running. Noodle adored his treats of sunflower seeds, mealworms, and veggies, and was always found waiting eagerly at the door at the appointed time.

Last night was the first time he wasn’t interested in food, so he was given some pain reliever to make him comfortable, and was tucked up in the warmest spot with his girls watching over him. Tonight, Noodle was very weak. He had another dose of pain meds, and snuggled up with his human mom.

He passed peacefully an hour later, warm and knowing he was loved beyond measure.
