Magna, Chirrut and Baze

Status: Ready for Adoption

Arrived: April, 2026

Species and Minimum Ethical Enclosure Requirement: Goldfish (Comet/Common type): At their current size, each fish requires a minimum of 50 gallons individually. This means a 200 gallon tank or larger would be needed to house them appropriately indoors. A pond with clean water is the best and most suitable long-term home.

Sex: 1 female (Magna), 2 males (Chirrut and Baze)

Age: Approximately 6 years

Size: Female is just over 6 inches (body length), males are approximately 5.5 inches

Location: Fenelon Falls (City of Kawartha Lakes)

What is their background story?:

About six years ago they were pulled from an outdoor pond that had started to freeze over in late fall. The pond had been left unattended and a thin layer of ice had already formed.

Five small goldfish were brought inside that day, each only a couple of inches long. Over time, these three became a bonded trio and have grown up together through multiple tank upgrades as they outgrew each space, eventually moving into a custom 75 gallon setup.

Magna, the female, got her name when she was younger and losing her black camouflage. She had a stripe across her nose that looked like a moustache, so she was originally named Magnum before it became clear she was a female.

The two males were later named Chirrut and Baze, inspired by the characters from Rogue One. Chirrut, who has impaired vision and cloudy eyes, shares his name with the blind warrior, while Baze reflects the loyal companion who always has his back.

One of the males developed impaired vision, and the other two began helping him navigate. During feeding time, they gently nudge him toward food and stay close to him. They have formed a cooperative, social bond that is very special to see.

What is their favourite activity?:

They are incredibly interactive and social. At feeding time, they gather right at the front of the tank and swim up to greet you. When spoken to, they come close and engage, clearly recognizing their people.

They are comfortable with gentle touch and will swim right up when a hand is placed in the tank during feeding.

They also get very excited when algae is cleaned from the glass and eagerly snack on it as it comes loose.

They are most playful first thing in the morning, they usually zoom around their tank most around breakfast time.

What is their favourite food?:

High quality goldfish flakes and Bug Bites for goldfish, fed twice daily

What is their best trait?:

Their personalities and their bond.

They are not passive fish. They are curious, responsive, and clearly aware of their environment and the people around them. Magna in particular is bold and expressive. She will get feisty and even splash water out of the tank with her tail.

They also care for one another, especially supporting Chirrut, which makes their dynamic truly unique.

Final thoughts:

These fish are deeply loved and have been part of a home that sees them as individuals, not decorations.

They must be adopted together, as they rely on one another and have grown up side by side. It is important that they go to a home that understands goldfish care and can provide a large, well maintained environment where they can continue to thrive.

Anyone adopting them should not get too attached to any layouts/placement of decorations or plants, because if they don’t like it there, they will slowly move it to where they want it. Even the substrate.

They love a bubbler, and adding water to the tank is always a team sport! They get very involved with the extra bubbles and the current.

They love a good sunbeam, especially on a summer afternoon. Although it’s not very good for the water quality, it makes them so happy, it’s almost like watching cats stretch out and nap in a sunbeam.

They may be small, but their personalities are anything but.
